A Little Something Supports Howard Center
For the last two years, A Little Something, a locally-owned shop in Shelburne, has been donating a portion of the profits from locally made and in-house created jewelry to Howard Center. These pieces are designed and made by employees A Little Something hired through Howard Center’s Project HIRE program and in collaboration with fellow employees at the shop.
The unique partnership began when A Little Something acquired the inventory from the studio of local jewelry designer Helena Maxwell, who passed away in 2019. A Little Something sought to keep Helena’s art alive by purchasing her retail and studio inventory, which included finished pieces and loose gemstones, beads, and findings. Deidre Senior, owner of A Little Something, is supporting Helena’s dedication to mental health wellness by donating a portion of each sale of this jewelry line to Howard Center. Helena was a longtime supporter of Howard Center, and Deidre has directly worked in support of their Project HIRE initiative since 2011, so it’s a perfect match that benefits Howard Center
“Helena’s jewelry was so inspiring,” says Senior. “Her work revolved around her love of color, texture, and timeless beauty. She had a vast repertoire of styles and designs, so her jewelry appealed to many. She was a talented artist and an incredibly kind and inspirational woman, and we're honored to support the services Howard Center provides through our sales of this line.”
Project HIRE networks with and supports local businesses to fill employment openings that match individuals’ skillsets and passions. Deidre’s idea provides a unique opportunity for an employee to develop new skills and experience in jewelry making. Customers appreciate these unique (and typically one-of-a-kind) pieces, a fact that highlights A Little Something’s dedication to both the preservation of Helena’s memory and Howard Center.
Since 2011, Senior has collaborated with Project HIRE at Howard Center by providing part-time jobs to individuals with special needs. “I’m so happy we have an opportunity to help folks who may not have the chance to find work that is meaningful to them, which allows creativity, learning new skills and provides them with a paycheck,” explains Senior. “My goal is to continue supporting Howard Center so they can do the important work of helping those in our community who need their services.”
