PLANNING & SURVIVING YOUR KITCHEN REMODEL

11/24/2023 09:54AM ● By Rachel Cloutier
We’ve all been there; looking at that wall and saying to yourself, “Wouldn’t it be great if that wall was gone, and we could reorganize the kitchen?” But how do you even get started?

Peregrine Design/Build  brings with it over 35 years of expertise in the remodeling industry. Over these years, the company has garnered valuable insights and tips to ensure a seamless remodeling process.

1. The original kitchen had limited space for movement. Now, the chef can effortlessly navigate and savor the enchanting vistas of Lake Champlain.

RESEARCHING AND HIRING A PROFESSIONAL REMODELING SERVICE

Before diving into your kitchen remodel project, it is important to gather recommendations
from friends, family, and neighbors. Ask them if they have had any positive experiences with remodeling services in your area. These personal recommendations can give you valuable insights into the quality of work and customer service
provided by different contractors.

Another great resource to help you find a professional remodeling service is Vermont Builders & Remodelers Association. They have a wealth of experience and can provide you with recommendations for reliable contractors in your area.

Additionally, keep an eye out for job signs on your daily commute. If you see a construction site that catches your eye, take note of the company’s contact information and research them. This can be a great way to discover new contractors that you may not have otherwise come across.

TIPS FOR SURVIVING A KITCHEN REMODEL
Remodeling your kitchen can be a daunting task, but with some careful planning, you can make the process much smoother. Here are some tips to help you survive a kitchen remodel.

2. From cramped (below) to captivating (above)! The 10-foot island provides ample space to entertain.

HAVE A PRE-CONSTRUCTION MEETING

Before construction begins, hold a pre-construction meeting to review details such as parking arrangements, work hours, site protection, and schedule updates. By addressing these logistics upfront, you can minimize unassumed expectations and ensure efficient communication throughout the project. Also, setting up weekly meeting times allows for regular updates and progress reports, keeping you informed and involved in the remodeling process.

SET UP A TEMPORARY KITCHEN

During a kitchen remodel, your regular cooking space will be out of commission. To ensure that you can still prepare meals and keep some resemblance of a daily routine, set up a temporary kitchen in another part of your home. Identify a sink area in a bathroom, or even set up a temporary sink location reusing your old kitchen parts. Collect a few essential items like a cutting board, knives, pots, pans, and utensils. By having these available, you can continue to cook without too much disruption.

Additionally, plan your meals around alternative cooking appliances such as microwaves, toaster ovens, and hot plates. These can be used to prepare simple meals while your main kitchen is under construction. It’s a good idea to have a meal plan in place so that you can efficiently use these appliances and minimize the need for eating out.

ALTERNATIVE COOKING OPTIONS

If weather permits, consider using a grill for outdoor cooking. Grilling can be a fun and delicious way to prepare meals while your kitchen is being remodeled. It allows you to enjoy the outdoors and still have hot, home-cooked meals.

While you might initially underestimate the impact of not having access to your kitchen for a couple of months, or of having workers frequently present in your home, the reality could be more disruptive than you anticipate. The noise, dust, and general inconvenience can quickly become overwhelming.

3 Among Peregrine's cherished mudroom trans- formations, this is a stand out. The team converted a dull hallway into a bright, practical area flooded with natural light.

Consider the option of taking a short vacation or temporarily relocating while your home undergoes remodeling. This not only provides you with a chance to escape the disruption caused by the construction work, but also allows the contractors to proceed with their tasks unhindered, thereby expediting the overall process. It’s crucial, however, to discuss the timing of your absence with your contractor. Ensuring all pivotal decisions are made before your departure will allow you to fully relax and enjoy your vacation.
